Es ist leicht vorstellbar, dass sowohl die Jazz- als auch die Rhythm‘n Blues-Fans sehnsüchtig auf diese Atlantic LP gewartet haben. Die Ertegun-Brüder, hochgelobte Produzenten für die frühe LP-Phase dieser Stilbereiche, waren für Ray Charles, den ‘King of Soul’ wie er später genannt wurde, die Katalysatoren seiner Kreativität. In dessen Band war schon bei der ersten Live-Platte, aufgenommen in Newport 1958, der Kopf der heißen Bläsergruppe eben David ‘Fathead‘ Newman.

Die acht Titel auf der LP mit dem frühen, grünen Stereo-Label stammen alle aus dem Repertoire der Ray Charles Band, gewinnen aber durch die hier langen Improvisationen ohne Gesang an Schärfe und Jazz-Feeling. Es fehlt – zum Glück – der kommerzielle Druck. So kann sich sich Ray Charles ganz auf das Piano-Spiel konzentrieren und bietet herausragende Soli. Auch der Blues kommt nicht zu kurz: ‘Fathead’ gespielt in Moll. Dem Schreiber der liner-notes kann man nur zustimmen, wenn er für sich “Hard Times” als den Höhepunkt der LP definiert.

Allerdings sind die anderen Titel keinesfalls weniger gut. Darum muss man für diese Wiederveröffentlichung aus der frühen Atlantic-LP-Zeit eine dringliche Kaufempfehlung aussprechen.
