JSP Nitric Acid Substitute is designed to dissolve and refine gold when combined with hydrochloric acid, facilitating the precipitation and recovery of precious metals.
Directions for Use:
Prepare the Solution:
Dissolve 80 grams (2.8 oz) of JSP Nitric Acid Substitute in 50 milliliters (1.7 fl oz) of distilled water.
Use a small glass mixing container, adding the water all at once and swirling to aid dissolution.
Note: Distilled water is recommended to prevent impurities from affecting the solution's composition.
Add Hydrochloric Acid:
Measure 100 milliliters (3.4 fl oz) of JSP Hydrochloric Acid using a graduated cylinder for accuracy.
Carefully transfer the acid into the prepared solution, avoiding spills or splashes.
Gently swirl the container to mix the components thoroughly.
Caution: Perform this step in a well-ventilated area or under a fume hood, as the reaction may emit strong fumes.
Set Up a Safety Containment:
Fill a larger container with 50 milliliters (1.7 fl oz) of water to create a secondary containment.
Place the mixing container into this larger container, ensuring at least 1/4 inch (0.64 cm) of water surrounds it to catch any potential overflow.
Introduce Copper:
Weigh out at least 32 grams (1.1 oz) of laboratory-grade 99% pure copper pellets.
Add the copper to the acid mixture in the mixing container.
Note: Copper initiates the oxidation reaction necessary for producing nitric acid.
Cover and React:
Cover the mixing container with a larger glass container to trap nitrogen dioxide gas produced during the reaction.
Allow the reaction to proceed for approximately 1 hour, during which the gas will bubble through the water, forming nitric acid.
Tip: Place a weight on the covering container to prevent it from lifting due to gas pressure.
Safety Precautions:
- Always wear gloves and safety goggles when handling acids, as hydrochloric acid is highly corrosive and can cause severe burns upon contact with skin.
- Handle all chemicals with care, adhering to standard laboratory safety protocols.
By following these steps, you can effectively use JSP Nitric Acid Substitute in conjunction with hydrochloric acid to dissolve and refine gold, facilitating its subsequent precipitation and recovery.
