Macy Gray's debut album On How Life Is was released in 1999 and definitely could be called one of the most impressive R&B/Soul debuts. By selling seven million records worldwide it reached a wide audience and received airplay beyond the genre-specific stations. The single "I Try" became a massive hit and reached the number one spot in Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand. The album was, besides a commerical success, also very popular among critics. It was mostly praised for it's distinctive and outstanding style, which felt like a breath of fresh air in the genre. The song "I Try", eventually won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2001. On How Life Is is available as a limited edition of 3000 individually numbered copies on translucent yellow coloured vinyl and includes an insert.
