Chilling Effect is the product of 4 years of songwriting, rewriting, recording, re-recording, production and re-production that largely took place in 30 to 60 minute sessions in Patrick Wade's west Toronto home studio between 2022 and 2026. The album is inspired equally by late 70s R&B, yacht rock, baroque pop, and psychedelic soul. Wade specifically cites Steely Dan, The New Birth, The Kinks, Randy Nemwan, Bruno Berle, Ned Doheny, Rob Galbraith, Ironsides, The Beach Boys, Stereolab, Vulfpeck, Cortex, The Honeybus, Nathan Fielder, and the BeeGees as his direct influences for this record. The album includes 8 songs which explore both the literal definition of "Chilling Effect" (people being discouraged or intimidated from engaging in expression for fear of negative consequences) and the colloquial effect of chilling, (either by being too chill, or not chill enough) and the effect these frames of mind can have on someone. Lyrically, it is a typically cynical look at extreme character archetypes, social movements and the overarching self interest that ties it all together.
