When I finally set out to remix Shiny Eyed Babies, I found the process to be more constrained and more interesting than I expected. The challenge came from the limitations of the source material. Back when Shiny Eyed Babies was made, hard drives were smaller, and this was the last Bent Knee album for which I didn't archive the full raw stems. Instead of individual tracks for each instrument, I only had submixed groups, so, for example, the drums existed as a stereo bounce rather than separate mic channels, and the same was true for many other elements. As anyone who's mixed knows, it's far easier to process clean audio than to "unprocess" something that's already been compressed, distorted, and EQ'd. That meant my creative choices were largely bound by decisions I made over a decade ago. In the end, what emerged was something in between a true remix and a remaster; a reinterpretation shaped by both the limitations and the character of the original sessions."-Vince Welch
