Trumpeter Kris Tiner and pianist Cathlene Pineda have been playing music together for well over a decade, initially in the context of Pineda's quartet with three albums previously released on Orenda Records. Their deep friendship and intuitive musical connection led them quite naturally to the duo format, and in recent concert appearances they have explored original compositions, improvisations, and insightful arrangements of American jazz and folk song repertoire.Sung is the definitive statement of their duo music to date. It features mostly original compositions - four by Pineda and three by Tiner - with influences ranging from Ellington to Chopin, from Stravinsky to Kenny Wheeler. The first side of the LP closes with a heartfelt interpretation of "Silence", a composition by their mutual mentor Charlie Haden. The album was recorded in Los Angeles in a single session by expert engineer Talley Sherwood. Sung is available on Orenda Records on all digital platforms and in a limited vinyl edition that includes liner notes by Josh Haden.
